Neither is “bio.” One is about robots and one about patents, but each will interest at least one of our readers:īut a little setting first. I love the story behind the title and the book had two aspects that jumped out for me as relevant (enough) for this blog. This minor mid-50’s Heinlein novel doesn’t really belong in this series but I re-read it recently with some pleasure. ![]() 5/22/2023 0 Comments Shattered Warrior by Sharon Shinn![]() ![]() Written by Sharon Shinn and illustrated by Molly. The vividly colored artwork is equally strong, frequently carrying the plot and expressing the defiance of the multi-faceted characters. Get your hands on the Shattered Warrior Graphic Novel Graphic Novels from First Second on ComicHub. Verdict: Complex characterization is accompanied by a history of the planet and exciting suspense along with an in-depth perspective of class struggles and gender differences. Shinn has built a magnificent world peopled with diverse ethnic groups who live under occupation and face violence and possible death from trying to take back their independence. The danger of her rebellion increases when she is reunited with her niece as her relationship with another guerilla develops into an affair. ![]() ![]() She lives in her almost destroyed mansion on her former great estate and works at a mindless job in a factory, sorting minerals before she gets involved in a revolution with members of the mining underclass. In the end Noah takes responsibility for his own emotional needs (please note he *never* dumps that on Pilar, I love this man). ![]() It is notable also that though Noah finds joy and healing in his relationship with Pilar, great sex does not cure trauma. As ever Ms Bev leads the way, because we see Noah's pain and trauma but that doesn't stop him being a terrific hero. I don't think I've seen a romance where the cishet male hero was raped before. Noah has a brutal backstory in which he was shanghaied and spent six months on a prison island where he was raped several times. A star.ĬW: spoilers here for discussion of rape. She also executes, nearly literally, a fantastic "saving her man" bit of violence. Pilar is a thief, Cuban rebel, and gun runner who steals Noah's boat and draws a sword on him at a party. A terrific conclusion to this series, which stars three absolutely glorious heroines. ![]() 5/22/2023 0 Comments Amy engel the familiar dark![]() I’m not sure it was meant as a compliment, but I took it as one!ĭo you have a soundtrack for your writing? I also devoured most of Crichton’s other books over the next year, though only Congo made enough of an impression on me that I can recall much of the story two decades later. When the movie came out, I even painted a Matchbox car to match the iconic Ford Explorers used in the film. I remember making a scale model of the park using poster board, Legos, and little plastic dinosaurs. I loved the book and must have read it three or four times before Steven Spielberg’s movie adaptation was released the following summer. Sometime during the summer of 1992, when I was eleven years old, I bought a paperback copy of Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park, which had been released at the end of 1990. ![]() |
